NBA Draft Player Profile - Nick Young

Nick Young

By Dennis Velasco, About.com

Born: June 3, 1985
High School: Cleveland
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
College: University of Southern California
Position: Shooting Guard
Height: 6'7"
Weight: 206 lbs.
Class: Junior

Positives:

Young is both fundamentally sound and creative. He is probably the best mid-range shooter in the draft and one of its more creative as Young likes to attack the basket and release shots in somewhat unconventional ways. He basically makes tough shots look easy. Young has long arms and very good athleticism, which should translate to him being able to disrupt passing lanes on the defensive end. He has surprisingly good post skills that he uses to shoot turnaround jumpers. Young's shooting range includes three-point territory.

Negatives:

Seems to lack a killer instinct at times as he will get caught standing around on both ends of the floor. Young also can get caught up with only shooting jumpers instead of attacking the basket. If he's going to be a mid-range type of shooter on offense, he'll need to work on moving without the ball to get open shots ala Reggie Miller.

Overview:

Young is a great scorer and can definitely get the nets snapping jumper after jumper. However, he'll need to work on slashing to the basket, getting to the line, and move without the ball in order to succeed at this level, much like the way the [/link url=http://probasketball.about.com/od/detroitpistons/p/detpistons.htm]Detroit Pistons[/link]'Richard Hamilton has.
